Host organisations

Volunteers are assigned within host organisations in many countries. Host organisatons include local and international non-government organisations (NGOs), academic institutions, government departments and businesses. Volunteers work with colleagues in these host organisations and contribute to developing capacity within the organisation by sharing skills and experience, increasing resources or working on systems and processes.

Host organisations develop volunteer assignments with Core Partners and manage Australian volunteers as part of their staff team. Responsibilities of host organisations include:

  • supervise volunteers
  • develop work plans which will build the capacity of the host organisation
  • identify key colleagues for volunteers to work with
  • provide a safe and secure working environment with adequate workplace
    facilities and resources, and
  • committment to sustainable development and capacity building.

A rigorous assessment of potential Host Organisations is conducted by the In-Country Managers of the AVID Core Partners to assess their suitability and capacity to host volunteers.
